What Personal Data We Collect and Why

Comments. When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user-agent string to help with spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (a hash) may be shared with the Gravatar service to check whether you use it, in line with Gravatar’s own privacy policy. Once a comment is approved, your profile picture becomes visible to the public alongside it.

Media. If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images that include embedded location data (EXIF GPS), since visitors can download and extract location data from images posted on the site.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may opt in to having your name, email address, and website saved in cookies for your convenience on future visits. These cookies last one year.

Visiting our login page sets a temporary cookie to check whether your browser accepts cookies; it holds no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser. Logging in sets additional cookies to save your login details and screen display choices — login cookies last two days (or two weeks if you select “Remember Me”), and screen-option cookies last a year. These are removed when you log out.

Editing or publishing an article sets one more cookie containing only the post ID of the article you edited; it expires after a day and contains no personal data.

Embedded Content From Other Websites

Pages on this site may include embedded content such as videos, images, or articles. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other website directly, and that site may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content — including tracking your interaction if you are logged into an account there.

How Long We Retain Your Data

Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely, so that follow-up comments can be recognized and approved automatically rather than held for moderation. For users who register on our site, we store the personal information in their profile; users can see, edit, or delete that information at any time (except their username), and administrators can also see and edit it.

What Rights You Have Over Your Data

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request an exported copy of the personal data we hold about you, or request that we erase it — except where we’re required to keep certain data for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where We Send Your Data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam-detection service.

Questions about this policy can be directed to us via the contact.
